When is Columbus Day? Is Columbus Day a federal holiday?-2023

In 2022, for the second consecutive year, the Biden Administration made a proclamation, designating the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day. This acknowledgement of Native American heritage and contributions now stands federally side-by-side with Columbus Day, traditionally observed on the same date.

This shift in emphasis on Columbus Day emerges from critiques surrounding Christopher Columbus and other explorers for their roles in perpetrating violence and enslavement during their voyages to the Americas.

When do we observe Columbus Day in 2023?

Both Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day will be marked on Monday, Oct. 9, in 2023. These observances take place yearly on October’s second Monday. On this date, postal services and many educational institutions will be closed. Some financial institutions will also observe the holiday. A comprehensive list of closures is available here.

Does Columbus Day have federal holiday status?

Indeed, Columbus Day retains its status as a federal holiday. Though some perceive it as a celebration of Italian American legacy, there are voices that argue it celebrates a journey leading to the decimation of indigenous populations. Scott Stevens, who helms the Native American and Indigenous Studies Program at Syracuse University, mentioned in a conversation with USA TODAY that the celebration of American colonialism in history, seen without its problematic aspects, is concerning to those residing in Native-American territories or reservations.

By 2022, over twelve states and upwards of 130 local administrations have made decisions to either forgo Columbus Day celebrations or transition to Indigenous Peoples Day. Different states either recognize Indigenous Peoples Day through formal announcements or consider it an official holiday.

For the past two years, Indigenous Peoples Day has received federal recognition, with the Biden administration designating the second Monday of October to “honor the rich tapestry of our history and the Indigenous communities that have helped shape our nation.
